Understanding the Twelve Houses

If signs describe how a planet expresses itself, houses describe where — which specific area of your life that energy tends to show up in. A chart with a lot of activity in the money-and-values house is going to feel very different from one with the same planets concentrated in the partnership house, even if the signs involved are identical.

Whole-sign astrology, which is what we use here, treats each house as an entire zodiac sign wide, starting from whichever sign your ascendant falls in. That means every planet in your chart lands cleanly in one of twelve houses — no ambiguity about borderline cases.

Here’s what each one actually governs.

1st House — Self

Identity, appearance, first impressions. This is your rising sign’s home turf, and it’s the lens through which you meet anything new.

2nd House — Resources

Money, possessions, and personal values. Less about how much you have and more about your actual relationship to security and worth.

3rd House — Communication

Everyday conversation, learning, siblings, short trips. The house of the mind in motion, rather than the mind in contemplation.

4th House — Home & Roots

Family, ancestry, and your emotional foundation. Often described as the most private house — the version of you that only shows up once the door is closed.

5th House — Pleasure & Creativity

Romance, creative self-expression, and joy for its own sake. This is where you take risks specifically to be seen.

6th House — Work & Wellness

Daily routine, health, and the practical business of showing up. Less glamorous than most houses, but it’s where a lot of real life actually happens.

7th House — Partnership

Marriage, business partnerships, and any serious one-to-one relationship. The house of “me” becoming “we.”

8th House — Transformation

Shared resources, intimacy, and deep change. Traditionally one of the more intense houses — it touches on merging with another person and what comes out the other side of a real crisis.

9th House — Expansion

Travel, higher education, philosophy, belief systems. The search for meaning beyond what’s immediately in front of you.

10th House — Career & Reputation

Public life, ambition, and the legacy you’re building. Your Midheaven’s home turf, and often the most visible house in a chart.

11th House — Community

Friendship, group identity, and long-term hopes. Less about romantic connection and more about who you choose to build a future alongside.

12th House — The Subconscious

Solitude, the unconscious, and what tends to stay hidden until it doesn’t. Dreams, spirituality, and endings all live here.

Reading houses alongside signs

The house tells you where; the sign tells you how. Mars in your 10th house means your drive shows up in your career, full stop — but Mars in Capricorn in the 10th house plays out very differently than Mars in Sagittarius in the 10th house. The first pursues career ambition through discipline and long-term structure; the second pursues it through exploration and a refusal to be boxed into one lane. Neither is more “correct” — they’re just different dialects of the same underlying placement.
